COLOUR YOURSELF SAFE THIS HOLI
Holi, the festival of colours, marking the beginning of spring is here! The vibrant colours and the festive mood is enough to light up the atmosphere. However, it is very essential to ensure that we have a safe Holi.
Most synthetic colours used contain harsh chemicals like Silica, which can lead to skin allergies and damaged hair. So first I would request all to play Holi with organic colours. A wonderful way to play Holi is to play it with flowers. Herbal and natural colours like turmeric, tea leaves, henna, marigold flowers etc can be a very good choice for playing Holi as they don’t harm your skin much.
I would recommend you to follow Holi skin and hair care as under:
Avoid skin care procedures like waxing, threading, facials or Chemical peels at-least 3-4 days before Holi.
Clothing: Wear dark coloured, full- sleeves cotton clothes. Synthetics would be sticky and denims would be heavy once you have a bucket full of water splashed on you.
Ensure that the clothes you choose to wear cover maximum parts of your body. The best choices would be high-necks or full-sleeves. The more you cover your body, the higher are the chances of saving your skin from colour harm.
Nails: Protect your nails by applying nail polish as this will give you a protective coat.
Lips: Apply a lip balm or a lipstick so that it keeps the lips protected and moisturised at the same time.
Eyes: Don’t wear lenses. In fact completely avoid wearing lenses or glasses. But if you cannot do without glasses, just be careful while applying colour. Mostly people are interested in applying colours on your face and the edges of your specs might hurt your face.
Hair: The best way is to tie your hair. You’ll be surprised how much this helps reduce damage to your hair. Go ahead & indulge in a girlie-like Pony-tail!
The scalp gets dry with the chemicals in the colours. So oil your hair with warm coconut oil, castor oil or olive oil before you venture out.
Skin: Use a generous amount of moisturizer with sunscreen all over your body, especially behind your ears and ear lobes as these are areas one tends to neglect. Make sure that the moisturizer has an SPF as you do not want to catch a tan from the sun!
You are now all set but not before you have a good hearty breakfast & 2 glasses of water. You need the fluids to keep your body hydrated.
• Remove Gulal with dry hands rather than using water as it spreads even more after water application.
Do not scrub the colour off with soap. Use a cream-based cleanser or you can even use oil for removing the colours, and then bathe. Apply a lot of moisturising cream to keep the skin hydrated.
Hair should be washed with a mild shampoo followed by a good conditioner.
